Since the 1930′s, when air crash statistics first started to be collected, the rate of airline accidents and fatalities has been surprisingly steady. That is, the percentage of accidents and deaths is on average about the same, year on year. So in spite of technical advances, the number of accidents and fatalities per hundred flights continues unabated.

The odds of being on an airline flight which results in at least one fatality is about 1 in 3.3 million. This assumes that you travel on a mix of different airlines (not just the airlines with the safest records). On October 6, 1955, United Airlines Flight 409 crashed near the top of Medicine Bow Peak, killing all 66 people on board (63 passengers and 3 crew) – the worst crash in U.S. history at the time. Once the bodies were recovered, explosives and napalm were used to destroy the remains of the plane. But according to Wikipedia, there are still parts of the plane scattered near the summit, which I looked for as I climbed to the top on August 13, 2007.

In southern Wyoming, near the border of Colorado, are the Medicine Bow Mountains. The Snowy Range makes up the heart of them. It can be accessed by taking Highway 130 west from Laramie, or east from I-80, near Walcott. After coming through from Laramie and camping one night, we loved the area so much that we returned a week later to camp at Sugarloaf Campground, the highest campground in the area (perhaps one of the highest in the country?)

It was surprisingly warm considering that the campground is at almost 11,000 feet, and there were still large patches of snow visible all over the surrounding peaks. When I woke up at 5:45 Monday morning to climb the peak, I was able to start out in a t-shirt. Though I had a sweater and a jacket with me, I never used either, even at the windy summit.

I started early, thinking it would take several hours to reach the top. The summit did look close, but then mountain tops always look closer than they really are, so I assumed it was many miles away. My map didn’t have a scale, so I really didn’t know how far it would be. After hiking down the road to Lewis Lake, I picked up the trail just as the sun was starting to come up.

Fifty minutes after I left the van, I was standing on the summit. This was the fastest I have ever gone up a mountain, but not because I was rushing. It was only a little over two miles, and the trail was easy. I looked around and took my usual photo of my bare feet hanging out from the top.

I didn’t find any of the plane debris, but what I did see was a total of 26 beautiful alpine lakes, all counted as I stood on one rock looking down. Rocky slopes, alpine meadows, lakes and dark green forests were laid out in every direction I looked. I noted where we would backpack and camp on our next visit, and what peaks I might climb.

After 15 minutes or so I headed down, meeting three other hikers along the trail, all of whom pointed out the fact that my wife and I missed the meteor shower the previous night. It was so early that one person assumed I had spent the night on the summit of Medicine Bow Peak to watch the shooting stars. Hmm… maybe next year I will.

I might also find the pieces of that plane crash that eluded me. But in any case, we’ll be back here. The Snowy Range around Medicine Bow Peak is one of the most beautiful places we have camped.

Flying an electric RC plane is entertaining and educational and can be enjoyed by people of all age groups. You are never too young or too old to fly and it does not have to be an expensive hobby at all. Because there are so many model airplanes out there, deciding on your first remote control aircraft can be difficult. Even those that are very similar in design will have different flight and handling characteristics and many models are not suitable for beginners.

First, you should pick a model that is slow and stable enough for you to learn on, such as a trainer or park flyer. It can be based on a real airplane or be just a working model with wings and minimal skeletal structure. You do not have to and probably should not start off with an expensive electric RC plane with multiple channels and complicated controls. For learning to fly, stick with a basic model with 2 or 3 channels.

When you are ready to fly, pick a park or other wide open space. You will need plenty of room, especially since this is your first time handling the plane. You do not want to fly in a heavily populated area with buildings, power lines, telephone poles or other obstructions. Check wind direction and how hard it is blowing before starting the engine. Knowing which way the wind is blowing will help you prepare for any turbulence and if wind speed exceeds your plane’s operating parameters, wait for a less windy day to fly.

Shall we take the plane?

So you need to get somewhere in the 48 states. Do you choose a plane, a train, a bus (there are still a few left) or your personal automobile? Fuel is now a major expense, not only for you and your car but for everybody. The airlines have been losing money for years mostly due to artificially low fares. Now they have the jet fuel crunch. It is that old story, “So we lose money this year; we’ll make it up next year.” But that never happens. So now the costs have had to go up, ten bucks here, twenty there, all in an effort to look like they haven’t really raised the fares. And they’ll still lose money. While fuel is now the major culprit, it is just one of many loss factors the airlines face. But the real rub is the lousy service, unreliable schedules and broken promises.

And that isn’t the end of it. Not long ago almost every mid-sized town had commercial air service. The airlines are folding their wings and abandoning many of these cities with disastrous consequences for those cities, their commerce and their residents. Where a few years ago, the government told the airlines where to fly and how much to charge, they now can do pretty much as they please.

Amtrak: coming of age, finally

So air travel is no longer a desirable choice. How about trains? Just ten years ago it was cheaper and more convenient to fly than to take the train. Amtrak was losing money big time except on a few East Coast routes. Now Amtrak can be less expensive and considerably more convenient than an airline. Amtrak hasn’t changed its fare structure — yet. The airlines have had to. But Amtrak services a very limited number of communities. (This will be true of the airlines, soon.) If you are traveling with children, the choice is a no brainer; Amtrak is a good choice. If you are traveling with baggage, Amtrak will probably be the better choice (depends upon weight and size). If it is a long trip, Amtrak is slower (usually). If it is a short trip, Amtrak is frequently faster. But if you can accept the extended duration of your trip, Amtrak is certainly much more comfortable.

So let’s take the bus

Greyhound used to go almost everywhere. They had express busses for long distance runs and ‘milk runs’ for the shorter runs. Then the government said Greyhound was too big and making too much money (transportation in the USA didn’t get any less expensive than Greyhound!) so they broke it up. Buses still were the least expensive way to go. Reserved seats on a bus were almost unheard of, you felt like you were packed in a sardine tin, and almost nothing could be as boring as a bus ride. But they got you there, cheap.

I could buy dinner for two if I got a dime for every time I’ve heard someone say, “Boarding a plane, now, is like boarding a bus used to be.” Busses are now MORE convenient that the airlines and the airlines are steadily getting worse. So, perhaps, the solution is to take the train to the nearest city and then take the bus to your final destination.

Then we could take our family car

Then there’s always the family car (or van or SUV). It will take you where you want to go, when you want to go. You can stop, get out, smell the roses, eat something, — you have the options and most are under your control. Cost-wise, for trip of 600 miles, for a family of four (two adults and two children) your car will cost you about the same as Amtrak. But does Amtrak go where you want to go? For longer, overnight trips, the car is less expensive (you can get a motel room for much less than the cost of an Amtrak sleeper and, believe me, you don’t want to try to sleep in their coach seats. In most situations, the car, again for a family of four, is much less expensive than the airlines. What about the bus? The bus wins economically but a long trip with two children in a commercial bus is not going to be very pleasurable.

We’ll take our RV

There is one other option. If you already own an RV and it’s not a super gas hog (less than 8 miles per gallon), and you are going on an overnight trip, the RV wins hands down. You don’t have to pay for a sleeper or motel room and the fare (even at $4 or $5 per gallon) won’t be as hurtful. Like with your family auto, you can stop, get out, smell the roses, eat something, — you have the options and most are under your control.

So what will it be: Plane, Train, Bus or Car? No thanks, we’ll take our RV and enjoy life a lot more. RVing is certainly not dead!
